Diggs Gallery presents Young Americans: Photographs by Sheila Pree Bright, October 16, 2009 - March 6, 2010. This dynamic new series of photographs by Atlanta-based photographer Sheila Pree Bright explores the identities of U. S. citizens and immigrants pursuing citizenship by presenting portraits of Americans aged 18- 25, each posing with the American flag. The exhibition will feature more than 50 large format chromogenic prints, several accompanied by statements from the subjects revealing their unique conceptions of patriotism. The project began in 2006 and features 15 WSSU participants. Young Americans: Photographs by Sheila Pree Bright is organized by The Amistad Center for Art & Culture, Inc., Hartford, Connecticut, in collaboration with the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia. The Madness of Kings: Paintings by Tonya Ingersol
11/15/2009 - 1/23/2010 10am, at Delta Arts Center 2611 New Walkertown Rd, Winston-Salem
Like the Portuguese painter Paula Rego, Ms. Ingersol likes viewers to make up their own stories about her paintings. Ms. Ingersol orchestrates her paintings. Recruiting friends as models, renting costumes and seeking out unusual settings from old buildings to former theatres. She photographs these tableaux viveants, and then builds her bold canvases from the prints. Her latest series of paintings reflect her background in music, and several references are made to operas. The title of the show, The Madness of Kings, refers to Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ 8 Songs for a Mad King. Other topics of her work deal with race and class, and allegorical landscapes. Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10am -5pm. Saturdays: 11am-3pm. Center closed the 3rd Saturday of the month.
